This report was prepared by the expert team led by Ms. Katelijin van den Berg and Ms. Duong Cam Thuy (senior environmental experts) of the World Bank. Waste management in Vietnam is characterized by quite limited collection, treatment and disposal for almost all types of waste. Therefore, a large amount of waste is not treated or disposed in a controlled manner. Deficiencies in waste management are adversely affecting economic development and sustainable growth in Vietnam. This report aims to assist the Vietnamese government in forecasting solid waste generation, assessing the status of solid waste management, analyzing various options including investment requirements, operating costs. Part 2 of the report focuses on hazardous waste management, offering treatment options and management policies.
